Goodreads book description:
Seventeen years ago, an eclipse cloaked the kingdom of Relhok in perpetual darkness. In the chaos, an evil chancellor murdered the king and queen and seized their throne. Luna, Relhok’s lost princess, has been hiding in a tower ever since. Luna’s survival depends on the world believing she is dead.
But that doesn’t stop Luna from wanting more. When she meets Fowler, a mysterious archer braving the woods outside her tower, Luna is drawn to him despite the risk. When the tower is attacked, Luna and Fowler escape together. But this world of darkness is more treacherous than Luna ever realized.
With every threat stacked against them, Luna and Fowler find solace in each other. But with secrets still unspoken between them, falling in love might be their most dangerous journey yet.
With lush writing and a star–crossed romance, Reign of Shadowsis Sophie Jordan at her best.
Bland characters. Dull plot. Couldn’t even bring myself to care enough in order to actively dislike it. The actual story didn’t even start until like 2/3 of the way through.
I was interested in the medieval/fantasy type worldbuilding, but the characters were just completely unrealistic. Their personalities, dialogue, and everything were rather cringeworthy at times. And the writing almost felt like it was talking down to the reader? It was also super… unnecessary. Just full of pointless filler.
I did like that the Rapunzel character was blind, but the way it was approached was odd. It tried to turn her blindness into some superpower and completely ignored any actual ramifications of being blind. And the instalove was so, so bad. Plus, I really didn’t like any of the characters.
This wasn’t horrible, but there are definitely way better retellings to read.
