Furyborn is almost here!!! It comes out on May 22 and is totally one of the most hyped books so far this year. Basically, check this one out if you love YA fantasy! Thank you so much to author Claire Legrand for stopping by my blog to share some of her thoughts on writing Furyborn:

Follows two fiercely independent young women, centuries apart, who hold the power to save their world…or doom it.

When assassins ambush her best friend, the crown prince, Rielle Dardenne risks everything to save him, exposing her ability to perform all seven kinds of elemental magic. The only people who should possess this extraordinary power are a pair of prophesied queens: a queen of light and salvation and a queen of blood and destruction. To prove she is the Sun Queen, Rielle must endure seven trials to test her magic. If she fails, she will be executed…unless the trials kill her first.

A thousand years later, the legend of Queen Rielle is a mere fairy tale to bounty hunter Eliana Ferracora. When the Undying Empire conquered her kingdom, she embraced violence to keep her family alive. Now, she believes herself untouchable–until her mother vanishes without a trace, along with countless other women in their city. To find her, Eliana joins a rebel captain on a dangerous mission and discovers that the evil at the heart of the empire is more terrible than she ever imagined.

As Rielle and Eliana fight in a cosmic war that spans millennia, their stories intersect, and the shocking connections between them ultimately determine the fate of their world–and of each other.

Claire Legrand used to be a musician until she realized she couldn’t stop thinking about the stories in her head. A native Texan, she is now a writer and librarian living in central New Jersey

1) Which scene in FURYBORN was the most fun to write?

Two words: Chapter 41. (Though it left me 100% emotionally drained, and when I sat down to write the next morning I burst into exhausted tears and had to take the day off.)

2) Where is your dream writer’s retreat location?

I would love to have a summer retreat in Crested Butte, Colorado. I went there twice for summer music camps while in college and fell in love. It’s a ski town during the winter, but in the summer it’s a paradise of wildflowers, hiking, arts festivals, and gorgeous views.

3) If you could hang out with any one of your characters for a day, who would you pick and what would you do?

I would hang out with Eliana, from FURYBORN, and we wouldn’t do a single thing except sit on my couch. I would hug her, feed her, and make sure she took a nap and a hot shower. The girl needs it.

4) What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I wish I had time to do something other than write! Currently, between my writing schedule and my work schedule, it’s just not possible. When I’m not writing, or at work, the most activity I can manage is re-watching Friends on Netflix. To be perfectly honest, I’m not pleased with how few hobbies I have outside of writing. I’ve had to become hyper-focused to meet all my deadlines, and I’m not good at stepping out of that headspace to take care of myself. I would love to hike, cook, and get back into running, but I haven’t figured out how to juggle all of that yet. Hopefully as things settle down for me over the next few months, I’ll be able to make that happen.

5) Did you approach writing this book differently in any particular way since you had to deal with multiple POVs and times?

Not really, actually! I’ve been working on various drafts of this story for so many years that, when I finally sat down to write the current version of Furyborn, the words poured out of me. I knew the characters’ voices; I knew their arcs. I wrote in order, start to finish, alternating between Eliana and Rielle chapters just as readers would.

6) What’s your last 5-star read?

Right now I’m reading Damsel, by Elana K. Arnold, which is due out this fall. It is spectacular, and will absolutely be a 5-star read for me.

7) Any advice to beginning authors?

Write your books for you before anyone else. You are your own first, best, ideal reader.

Thanks so much for sharing and congratulations on Furyborn!
